Pattern Feature: Runway

Amy Tyson

We’ve been experimenting with Block weaving. We wanted to create pattern that have large areas of a color but don’t long “floats” of yarn on the surface for people to trip over. This structure allows for a concentrated section of higher pile yarns that are sort of like short loops.

You can see the backside of the Runway Lake on the rug and this pattern is reversible! Of course, it’s a mass of white loops on that side. It’s neat to see the front and backside at the same time.

Below is a colorway we’re hoping to make for an Idaho or Montana project. Wouldn’t this go great in your Jackson Hole mountain resort or Vail ski chalet?

We really wanted to make one where the blocks are even more dramaticallly different in color. Luckily for us, someone else got that idea and they ordered a small custom bathroom rug. Meg wove it after the Runway Lake on the same warp.

We’re going to do some additional colors of this soon in perky summer combos!

Recent Project: Ballard Rug

Amy Tyson

In recent weeks, I traveled to several showrooms around the country and everyone wants green.

Currently, we’re working on this custom project for a den in house near Lake Tahoe and I think they are ahead of the trend. I especially appreciate the call for a little terra cotta color to play off the multitudes of green.

This rug is 12’ wide by 26’ long. With a project that big, teamwork is essential. All the weavers had to work a day or two on this rug for a total of 12 days of weaving! That’s before you even get to finishing and backing.

Winter Wonderland of Wool

Artist’s Point in the summer! We always have snow nearby.

Winter is here. And with it, we can only hope for snow. Or is that just me? It’s been unseasonable warm this year and we miss the cold snowy days, the red noses, and the ever-present excuse to drink gallons of hot tea.

Just like there are so many kinds of snow, there are so many colors of Winter White. And we have rugs that show all those colors and textures. Talara in Navy and White reminds me of a snowy mountain range. The wind blows through stunning peaks in a glorious winter mood.

Gibson Royal Blue

If you like your whites on the cool side, the blues in this Gibson shimmer like shadows across dappled snow. It’s soft and fluffy.

Twisp Twill

Twisp Twill

This brilliant Twisp Twill, with the combination of vertical and diagonal, is fresh falling snow, moving along the wind. The light blue brings out the coldness, but the warm yellow in the warp yarn reminds us of those oddly warm snowy days.

Sometimes it is nice to view the glistening snow from warm inside your winter cabin. Olso in Black and White would make a fine addition to any cabin. It makes me want to sit by the window with a hot mug of cocoa, wrapped up in a cozy blanket.

Time to set your wintry rug by the fireplace so you can gaze upon your tamed snowflakes while drinking your favorite hot beverage.
